Normal mapping fun-fun

I'm finally getting the hang of normal mapping, used it for some fairly basic stuff here. This is still non-final stages of this set, there needs to be a few more details and I still have to figure out the lighting. The bottom one is a bit more recent, the top is a bit too bright and empty, but I think you can better make out the texture work.

Spaceman + Wireframe

The latest version of the spaceman model, there are a lot of small tweaks to it, as well as some larger ones, like the backpack (which took bloody ages as I could not settle on a design). The boots are more defined and I made the arms thicker. Also included the wireframe renders.

TLSE Spaceman

Early stages of the Spaceman character model for the Latest Show Ever intro that I'm working on. Also tried some coloring of the still in photoshop, just trying to get used to using the tablet again, as its been a while.

The model itself is still pretty early, I need to put a lot of extra detail into it, the backpack is pretty much just a placeholder box, that needs a lot more detail, also the boots are just a general shape as well as some other stuff here and there.

Toast Cat

Toast Cat (also known as Paul).
Based this on my girlfriend's doodle, that you can see below. I always wanted to model something based on one of her drawings, starting pretty simple though. But I will, at some stage, work on something more complicated.

Photocopy at Galway Film Fleadh

Our last year's film Photocopy has been selected for the Galway Film Fleadh! The Festival will be taken place between 6th to 11th of July, I'm not sure about the exact day of screening yet.

Old Stuff (part 2)

Some stills and early renders from Photocopy, a film that I worked on in ADA1. Not too sure if I can put the film online yet, as that would forfeit its festival eligibility.

Old Stuff (part 1)

Thought I'd post some of my older work that I've gathered throughout the 5 years of college. Although, I don't think there is a single piece of work here from my first year of college. And the rest of these have gone through countless editorials and reviews. so perhaps it would be more accurate to call this a selection rather than collection. So here goes:

2006-2007 (CCHND 1)

Play Beyond

Modeled this in Cinema 4D, back before I even knew how to use 3DS Max. For those that do not know, this is Sony's Playstation 3 console. I'm a bit of a gamer and back in 2006 I was rather exited about the console coming out, so just for the heck of it, I modeled this, before the console was even out for sale, basing it only on the screenshot that I saw of the system.

Gesture Studies

Gesture drawings were never my strength, although I do feel that I've made some massive improvements in the area. Strangely enough, I find it much easier to do gesture using less conventional gesture tools, such as paints or chalk, as oppose to charcoal or pencil.

Paintings

Painting, a personal discovery on my part. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did in CCHND 1 and 2. Its definitely something that I would love to come back to at some stage.

3D Haribo Sweets

Stills from a short advert that I was working on, with a few other people...

3D Layout

Back then, this was my biggest undertaking to date. And it was also then that I learned that iof I did all the modeling first and left all the texturing to the end...that would be a bad idea.

2007-2008 (CCHND2)

Colored Layout

This is probably my favorite 2D layout project that I've done, it is also the last one. I do hope to come back to doing some 2D work some day.

Walk Cycle
The character is a caricature of myself. I think it took me only about an hour to do this walk-cycle, and I haven't really done much 2D animation since then.

Showreel 27/05/10

Tried to mainly concentrate on my film work for this showreel. I'd appreciate and and all feedback I can get on it though...

Boom and Title

So, I came up with a place to put the title of the film, all in all, it will be appearing in the 4th scene of the movie, which is a bit strange, I suppose, but it will hopefully turn out ok.

And here are some of the high-action scenes, with explosions and stuff.

KABLAMO!

Found a nice little method for doing explosions in 3DS Max. No particles, volumetric lights or expensive plug-ins required, plus it renders pretty damn fast too. Here is the tutorial from youtube of how it can be used, although, personally I find tht it doesn't really work that well if you're going for the realistic look. Since, with Spark, I'm going really cartoony, I think this method will work nicely.

TV Show

So I decided to have a little robot-themed tv show on the TV screen in the 2nd flashback. Animated in After Effects, surprisingly took a bit longer then expected. But I like it now, for the simple animation it is...

Some Stills

After last year's film it was particularly challenging to keep myself from adding millions of details to scenes like this...

Actually decided to make this a lot...cozier, then I originally intended. Space is expensive in the future.

First time I put the characters intro a scene, hopefully the don't fade into the background too much.

Props

Yep 2 remotes, one for TV the other for robots, wonder if he ever mixes them up...

Characters!

Damn its been a while, again. I have to teach myself to be more regular with these updates.
